Supporting the Nature Center since 1973
Sandy Creek Nature Center was founded in 1973 by a group of 11 concerned citizens. In 1981, this group deeded the Nature Center to Athens-Clarke County which, to this day, operates the center. Sandy Creek Nature Center, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, continues to work in conjunction with ACC to fund special projects, property improvements and programs.
News: Restroom Upgrade
Thanks to a generous $68,000 grant awarded by Riverview Foundation, the restroom located behind the main Education & Visitor Center, will be getting a make-over. This project will begin shortly after construction of the adjacent Nature Playscape. The restroom serves the Oconee Rivers Greenway in addition to Nature Center users and is currently open 24 hours. Upgrades will include an expanded space, new fixtures, energy-efficient features and improved ADA access.
Membership is great way to tangibly express your support for Sandy Creek Nature Center, and memberships are available at a variety of levels. Members can enjoy benefits and the pride of supporting one of NE Georgia's premier outdoor education facilities. Memberships are tax-deductible and support special projects, property improvements and programs.
Annual Meeting (Pie Day)
Sunday, March 14
Drive or ride by for contactless pick up of our traditional pie in lieu of our regular Pie Day Annual Meeting. You'll receive a copy of the annual and be able to listen to an address from President Katherine Edison online. Feel free to explore our new Nature Playscape on your own after you pick up your pie.
The Nature Playscape
Imagine children clambering over small boulders….shimmying down a hillside…leaping over tree stumps…building hideouts from logs and limbs…romping with butterflies and birds.
It’s where kids connect with the outdoors. Where playtime becomes learning time. Its the Nature Playscape, our next big thing. This playscape is currently under construction in our former garden area behind the Education & Visitor Center. The playscape will open in the spring of 2021.
The Frog Hop 5K benefiting Sandy Creek Nature Center, is a fall tradition that spans over 20 years. This year, due to Covid 19 social distancing regulations, a race with 200 people on the Greenway isn't possible. However, we are not going to let a pandemic stop 20 years of tradition-the race must go on! Please support the Nature Center and pursue your own fitness goals by participating in our virtual run.
